Happy Labor Day!
For many people, this time of year symbolizes newness: Some are beginning their first year of elementary & secondary school; some are excited about impending graduation as they enter their last year of their prescribed program. Back to school time is an exciting time for Advocates for Adolescent Mothers as well. From 2010-2012 we hosted Back to School Celebrations to help young parents get prepared to return to school. From 2011 through the present we welcome new moms into our Educational Empowerment Program through which we provide financial and socio-emotional support to young moms who are in college . Educational Empowerment Program Class of 2015
In 2011 we launched the Educational Empowerment Program with the intention of creating a movement of young mothers who earn college degrees. Less than 2% of teen moms earn a college degree before reaching the age of 30. We believe that more young mothers would graduate from college if they had adequate support.
There are 2 young moms in our Educational Empowerment Program who will be entering their 4th year of college this Fall. Charity, who has been in our program since 2010, is a student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed the Spring 2014 semester with a 2.8 GPA. Here is what she recently had to say about the Educational Empowerment Program:
I joined Advocates for Adolescent Mothers(AFAM) in the Summer of 2011. Since then I have had multiple opportunities to share my story as
a teen mom and student, as well as benefit from multiple opportunities with the organization. AFAM has provided parenting resources, which have helped promote a healthy relationship and development for mydaughter and I. Additionally, through fundraising for AFAM and running in the Shamrock Shuffle this year, I was able to give back, increase my health, and complete my goals. Moreover, budgeting, goal setting, and vision board activities have helped me stay focused on my goals and plan for the future. Having another mom join in the workshops this year has given me the opportunity to share and listen to each other’s stories; providing a richer experience. Most recently, I utilized a skit to address an issue with effective communication in my current job. As I was prepared, the conversation with my employer went smoothly, and I was able to express my concern effectively. AFAM has provided me with so many enriching opportunities, and I look forward to continuing involvement in AFAM and seeing it grow.
Mara has been in our program since 2013. She is a student at DePaul University. She completed the Spring 2014 with a 2.9 GPA. Here is what she recently had to say about the Educational Empowerment Program:
This organization has not only helped me financially but also personally. After winning the scholarship from AFAM, I realized how lucky I am to be part of them. The workshops that I have to attend for my scholarship don’t feel like any other workshop, I feel a personal connection with other moms and realize that I’m not the only one and I don’t stand alone. AFAM has helped me become a better mom and a better person with all the information I receive in the workshops.
We will be welcoming additional young moms to the Educational Empowerment Program this Fall. This program is primarily supported by the generous contributions of private donors. The number of young moms that we are able to assist through this program is dictated by the amount donated to this program each year. We are so grateful to the impatient optimists who donate to this program–We have been fortunate to have the support of some donors since 2011 when the program started. Photos from Our May Event
On Saturday, May 3, 2014, we hosted a Cinco de Mayo themed party where we celebrated our 5th year anniversary. There was a nacho bar, margaritas and sangria, party favors, birthday cake, networking, raffles, and fun which benefited our awesome anti-poverty mission.
We are very proud of our accomplishments over the past 5 years and we are looking forward to many more great years of service. Here are a few photos from the event. Click here to view all of the photos on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
