Advocates for Adolescent Mothers Archive 2012
I hope you’ve been having a great week so far! It’s hard to believe that this year is almost over. Advocates for Adolescent Mothers has had a great year and it’s not over yet! Advocates for Adolescent Mothers is a budding nonprofit and social enterprise that has been able to accomplish quite a bit with the support of a few committed volunteers. We’ve been blessed with great volunteers throughout 2012, including our Summer Skylight Luncheon Host Committee, our Holiday Drive Planning Committee, and the Directors on our Board. This fall we welcomed our first group of interns, just in time for our holiday activities. Continue reading to become acquainted with our interns and learn more about our latest marketing campaign and holiday festivities. We are always looking for new volunteers to become involved with our organization in various capacities. Please email to learn more!
I appreciate your continued readership, and as always, I look forward to your replies!
Thanks and have a great day!

Meet Our Marketing Interns from Columbia College and Loyola University Chicago
Advocates for Adolescent Mothers is excited to introduce our PR/Marketing interns this semester. This is our first year hosting interns, and the time couldn’t have been more perfect. I was fortunate to snag our intern from Columbia in casual conversation, and AFAM was nominated by a team of Loyola students to be their nonprofit client for a communications project. All of our interns are helping us to gear up for the holidays, as well as developing a few tools that can continue to be used by our organization once this semester ends. It is a great pleasure for our organization to provide these students with opportunities and experiences that will serve them well as they begin their careers.
Brittany Black is a Senior Marketing Communications major at Columbia College Chicago, scheduled to graduate in fall 2012. She currently works as a student assistant at Columbia’s Services for Students with Disabilities office. As an intern with Advocates for Adolescent Mothers, Brittany is strengthening her marketing skills by working on projects such as email and holiday marketing, marketing on our website, and will propose a strategic marketing plan that can be used by AFAM on an ongoing basis. After graduation, Brittany intends to begin her career in public relations and pursue her passion for music.
Raelynn Castro, AFAM’s team leader, is a senior at Loyola University Chicago, studying Advertising/Public Relations with a minor in Marketing. She has experience with both non-profit organizations and for-profit businesses. Raelynn coordinates the efforts of her fellow team mates who have assumed the responsibility for marketing AFAM’s Holiday Drive program this year. She is currently a Public Relations intern at Bloomingdale’s Chicago. Scheduled to graduate this December, she plans to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment public relations. When not in school, Raelynn enjoys reading, cooking, writing for her blog, and learning new languages.
Mary Jo Warskow is a graduate student of Public Policy at Loyola University. Prior to her graduate studies, she enjoyed a 22-year professional career in corporate finance/accounting and IT. Her decision to pursue a new career path was motivated by her desire to play a larger role in advocating for her two main policy interests – adolescent sex education and the environment. She believes that in order to achieve a healthier, more sustainable future we must work to educate ourselves and others on the long-term consequences of our decisions and actions. Outside of school, Mary Jo enjoys reading, exploring our national parks and playing Lego video games on the Wii. Mary Jo’s contribution to AFAM includes a lead role in coordinating a community holiday drive and creating marketing materials for our Holiday Drive program.
Carly Shenigo is a senior at Loyola University Chicago studying Advertising/Public Relations. She also is passionate about graphic design and is minoring in Visual Communication. In her free time, Carly works as a barista, babysits, and volunteers at Inspired Youth Chicago. She enjoys reading, writing, listening to oldies, and playing on Photoshop. Carly is working on an editorial about the team’s work with Advocates for Adolescent Mothers.
Alexandra Hughes is a senior undergraduate student at Loyola University Chicago. She has a strong interest in social media and marketing. Outside of the classroom, Alexandra tutors high school students, serves on the executive board of Alpha Chi Omega at Loyola, and assists in the administrative office of the McGaw-YMCA Children’s Center. She also enjoys reading, traveling, knitting, and watching the Los Angeles Lakers. Alexandra is creating marketing materials and facilitating PR functions for AFAM’s Holiday Drive.
Alexis Zarifis is a senior at Loyola University Chicago studying Advertising/Public Relations and Marketing. She has past experience with a marketing internship at the Chicago Theater, a PR internship at the Aparecio Foundation (a non-profit organization empowering young woman) and another PR internship with a start-up company, State Street Sports. When Alexis isn’t working as a server at Devon Seafood Grill, participating in Greek life activities, and attending Leadership Development Program seminars, she is exploring the city of Chicago trying to find a hole-in-the-wall restaurant to fall in love with.
