Nothing Like the First Time
I hope this week has been going well for you so far! We still have lots of excitement left over after completing the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle this past Sunday. We were grateful to assemble a team of 8 awesome individuals who were willing to put their bodies to the test for AFAM’s mission to break the poverty cycle among families headed by young parents, help them establish prosperity, and prevent child abuse. We spent 6 weeks fundraising and training for the big day. From nerves raging high as we inched toward the start line, to going with the flow of a re-route, to conquering the hill from Roosevelt/Michigan to the finish line, it was a great and unforgettable experience!
I fought back tears as I crossed the finish line: Not because I was glad it was over (although I was :), but because running is such a metaphor for life–The perseverance, self-motivation, and refusal to give up when running is the same that is required in life–The finish line was symbolic for me.
Running allows me the opportunity to clear my mind and reflect on life. I composed a few blogs during the training for the Shamrock Shuffle. Feel free to check them out: Running is Such a Metaphor For Life and If I Can I Will.
Please continue to read this edition of The Archive for valuable information about opportunities to receive extra financial support for college, activities and events for Child Abuse Prevention month, and delectable food offerings from our featured partner.

APRIL IS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH!
The month of April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse Prevention month. While part of Advocates for Adolescent Mothers mission is to empower young parents to break the cycle of poverty among families headed by young parents, another significant element of our mission is to prevent child abuse. Children of families headed by young parents are at a greater risk of child abuse. Additionally, child abuse is correlated to teen pregnancy; studies show that 60% of teen mothers were victims of child sexual abuse.
To be successful at breaking the poverty cycle among families headed by young parents, we must also work to break the cycle of teen pregnancy, which means that we must work harder at preventing children from becoming victims of sexual abuse. This is the first year that Advocates for Adolescent Mothers will take leadership in activities to increase awareness about child abuse during Child Abuse Prevention month. Please continue reading to learn about the activities AFAM is participating in for Child Abuse Prevention month. We hope that you will be able to join us at one or more events!
